Lewis, 50, is the first openly transgender person to be named to the senior-most staff in any Senate office, a job she took in the spring of 2016. She assumed her post after working in the mid-level Senate leadership office and prior to that in the prime-time television news business. While at the Senate, Lewis planned and organized numerous international delegations and conducted a number of hearings, including one in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that featured the nomination of Gina Haspel to head the CIA. Lewis received praise from both sides of the aisle on issues she took on, including the authorization for war in Libya, the sanctions on Russia, and the humanitarian and foreign assistance programs. She was also a source of intelligence on issues and events in the Middle East and North Africa.


It can make it easier for trans people to be more open about themselves. It can open doors for trans people. And it just makes the people in those offices understand that there are people out there who are like them and that they all have a shared identity, Lewis said.


The pandemic has also impacted Lewis. Initially, she was prone to anxiety and depression when her desk at the Department of State was filled with boxes of paperwork and the GSA office had just closed for renovations.
