The current issue of the series covers the subject of “Military Geography and Mapping” written by Dr. Holger A. Stock. Dr. Stock is a leading military historian whose field of expertise covers a wide array of fields, including fortifications, military geography and cartography. He has published several articles and books on these and other aspects of the military historical heritage. In the current issue, Dr. Stock outlines the most significant developments in the field of military geography in the years leading up to the Second World War. Modern military geography, he writes, has developed from the work of geographers such as William Roy in the early 20th Century. The author feels that Roy was the greatest pioneer of modern military geography, due to his pioneering work in the characterization of conflict, knowledge of terrain and conceptualization of war. The continued use of maps was important to him, as it was for many in his day, but “with the advent of radio, radar and computer technology, Roy’s pictures of modern warfare are of interest mainly for their historical insight.” A special emphasis on the role played by geography in war development, and more particularly, the military utility of geographical knowledge was stressed by Roy, who regarded this as the most important determinant of victory. The author points out that the most famous case in point was the so-called “Battle of the Somme,” where “British and German forces faced each other across a 20-kilometer long front in northeast France, so named after the salient in the northern portion.” This battle was the longest and most intense tank combat operation of the Great War. British General Sir Henry “C” Haig claimed that the conflict had been won by sheer valor. The original cost of the battle was enormous, with “3.7 million shells, 7.6 million rifle cartridges, and 2.5 million grenades thrown by both sides.” In total, almost 1.2 million tons of ammunition had been used, with the total British casualties as high as 1 million, to German losses of some 150,000 men, making it one of the bloodiest battles in history. “However,” as Dr. Stock observes, “nothing of note occurred during this battle. Indeed, the fighting was largely confined to a zone of about 8 square kilometers, without the cavalry being directly involved until 22 July. 84d34552a1
