web and mobile developers have significantly less professional coding experience, on average, than developers in other technical disciplines such as systems administration and embedded programming. across all developer kinds, the software industry acts as the primary incubator for new talent, but sees a relatively low proportion of more experienced developers.

similar to our question about gender, we also asked developers who identify as female about their current role, and where they see themselves in five years. we broke the gender questions down by year to see how our developers have been perceived by employers over time. we also included a write-in option for gender identities that weren't included in the list. we know developers can be male, female, or a gender that is not listed.

developers can identify as transgender, intersex, or a gender that is not listed. all gender identities are acceptable on stack overflow, and we welcome developers who identify as part of any of those groups.

the first number in the percentage columns in this section is the number of developers who work as web developers or mobile developers in their day-to-day work; the second is the number who work as desktop applications developers. the percentage column for full-time developers is the number of developers who indicate that they are working in their field full time.

what is it like being a developer of color? we can see from our data that our developers who identify as black or of african descent are over-represented as web developers and mobile developers. developers who identify as native american, pacific islander, or indigenous australian are over-represented in web and desktop applications development. 84d34552a1
