terrible. what i'd give for an epic disaster movie that made sense, had a decent cast and wasn't some lame soap opera. hollywood was really good at back in the '80s. ate crow for breakfast. if i wanted to see the world go up in smoke i'd watch home videos. now we get this.

people pay their money and expect something better. if they want a film with explosions, they can rent transformers or watch the explosions from a safe distance. the scariest thing about this disaster movie is that hollywood actually believes the public will pay for this.

a volcano erupts in los angeles, causing the destruction of the city. but it is up to fire fighter mike roark and geologist amy barnes to find a way to stop the lava and save the city. this film was about as expected and as mediocre as its title. the volcano looks good and is big. the huge lava flows remind us of the day after tomorrow, but if that were a disaster film, it would be praised as genius. as a disaster film, it is praised as a disaster. still, the overuse of the the word "volcano" makes it seem much more interesting and frightening, but this film doesn't take advantage of the fact. tommy lee jones and anne heche are okay actors, but they have a lot of footage of them sitting around on a couch talking about what should happen next. the script is pretty lame and you can tell the director is a fan of disaster films and thinks he can do better. the dialogue is a mixture of seriousness and sarcasm, which was not very effective. this was more of a guilty pleasure than a thrill ride. the film also tries to be a little self-referential, with references to other films. but it does this in such a way that it is almost an insult to the audience, when they are paying to see something in a film that hasn't been seen before. you know, like a volcano. 84d34552a1
