when director ridley scott began to think about another way to portray an alien, he wanted to work in the more classic style of godard's 1970 le samouraï, which he discovered in the world of sci-fi. until alien, this was a difficult style to do on-camera, though it had a visceral impact through word of mouth. he began with an abandoned industrialist's mansion which he described as a "junkyard castle" of monolithic façades. there were rooms made of concrete and brick, and walls covered with graffiti. the film cuts from this decaying mansion to the bow of a spacecraft. an alien spaceship appears on the monitor screen. a searchlight sweeps the room until it comes to rest on kane's blood-covered face. on the monitor, the alien looks like a man on a steed. we see kane's face as if in the throes of a nightmare, his eyes clenched shut. we get the image of a race between two beings, a man trying to ward off an intruder from his home. suddenly, the gory scene in the heart of the doglike alien shatters us with the cry of the man as he screams in anguish. even more abruptly, we're outside in the night. the doglike alien ambles on a beach. it moans in an animalistic way as it raises its head to take in its surroundings, oblivious of kane's blood on its whiskers. as the alien walks, it moves its head left to right, like a snake. we see its body, which is similar to a dog's, and its blurred, featureless face. it licks its lips. and the scene reels in the action of the alien as it walks up to the ship and approaches ripley's quarters. this leads to the famous shot of the alien bursting out of kane's chest. we return to the industrialist's castle. we see an x-ray of kane's chest, a disgusting alien, an egg, and a fetus in the uterus of one of the humans. the viewer is gripped in horror and terror at the monstrous alien's arrival on earth, the landing of the alien on kane's face, and the alien's leap out of kane's chest. the doglike alien swipes its claws up and down kane's body, as if to mutilate his face. the viewer is freezing with fright. we see ripley in her quarters and then she has kane in her arms. ripley's eyes bulge and she gulps. the alien seizes his hand and we see the eye emerge. ripley sees the alien and starts to scream. she runs away, but the alien follows. an alien monster starts to eat a man's face. we see its sharp, barbed teeth biting into the alien's prey. it has a short, powerful leap. ripley arrives in her quarters to find an alien nest. her screams are heard. she places her hand against the window. an alien crawls out, with a long stalk attached to its back. it has an egg-like appendage. ripley is crushed to death as the alien destroys the window. the alien escapes. the industrialist contemplates a fly buzzing around his decaying mansion, and a painting on the wall. it shows a carvings of a pyramid and two interconnecting trees. he sits down to watch television. we see him watching a space flight. the spaceship is surrounded by a ring of stars. there is a countdown from 10. a single craft leaves the spaceship and moves towards the camera. the craft is a sphere of lights going down towards the earth. 84d34552a1
