Two cases of Mode I crack of Barre Granite are subjected to three-point bending tests in four directions, on which the influence of the crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) on the stress intensity factors are studied. This study is mainly oriented at examining the influence of the crack mouth location on the calculation of the stress intensity factors. The experimental results show that for the studied cases, the three-point bending stress fields are symmetrical and independent of the CMOD. The influence of the CMOD on the calculated stress intensity factors ranges from 0.02% to 0.83%. This is mainly caused by variation in the normalized end opening displacement of the crack. The differences in the stress intensity factor values calculated by using the crack mouth locations at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5% of the length of the bar are relatively small, i.e., within 0.09%. This study reveals that the calculated stress intensity factors are not dependent on the CMOD. Moreover, the data show that the ability to predict the existence of a stress concentration zone by merely looking at the crack mouth geometry is not very accurate. In addition, use of one value of the stress intensity factor for criticality zone is considered appropriate.
We present a quantitative experimental study on Mode I crack growth of concrete, in the form of a composite beam, subjected to bending loading. Crack mouths were systematically changed from the free end of the beam (i.e., the end that is not fixed) to the other end of the beam (i.e., the end that is fixed). To minimize the effect of potential nonlinearities and under-engineering of the compressive members of the beam, cracks were generated at a distance of 20% of the cross section of the compressive members, and the distance was maintained constant for different experiments. The load-displacement diagrams showed that the size of the crack mouth opening varies from 9.2 mm to 10.3 mm, and the work of the applied load was constant in all cases. 84d34552a1
