@amandaguthrie/panda-preset-breakpoints

A Panda CSS preset that generates default breakpoints from popular open source packages like Ant Design, Bootstrap, Chakra UI, Mantine, Material Design, Primer, and Tailwind CSS.

Configure

In your panda.config.{ts,js} file, import the preset and include it in your presets list. This preset does not rely on any of the default @pandacss presets as a dependency.

!TIP If you don't currently have any presets in your config file and are using any of the Panda CSS defaults, add @pandacss/preset-base and/or @pandacss/preset-panda to the array.

import { defineConfig } from '@pandacss/dev';
import breakpointsPreset, { type BreakpointsPresetOptions } from '@amandaguthrie/panda-preset-breakpoints';

const breakpointsPresetConfig: BreakpointsPresetOptions = {
  system: "chakra"
};

export default defineConfig({
  // ...
  presets: [
    // ... Other presets
    breakpointsPreset(breakpointsPresetConfig),
  ],
  // ...
});

Function pandaPresetBreakpoints

The function pandaPresetBreakpoints is the default export which optionally accepts configuration parameters and returns a Panda CSS theme or theme extension preset.

Parameters

The parameters for the default export options are exported as type BreakpointsPresetOptions.

  • system (DesignSystem, Optional)
    • Specify a design system to generate breakpoints for.
    • If a string is not a valid design system, the preset will return the default system
    • Default: "chakra"
  • extend (boolean, Optional)
    • true - Return the configuration in {theme: {extend: {breakpoints: {}}} to merge the configuration with other presets' breakpoints.
    • false - Return the configuration in {theme: {breakpoints: {}} to replace other presets' breakpoint configuration with this one.
    • Default: true

Examples

Generate default Chakra UI breakpoints

import { defineConfig } from '@pandacss/dev';

    // ... Other presets
    breakpointsPreset(),
  ],

});
const defaultPresetReturn = {
  theme: {
    extend: {
      breakpoints: {
        sm: '30em',
        md: '48em',
        lg: '62em',
        xl: '80em',
        '2xl': '96em'
      }
    }
  }
}

Generate breakpoints by specifying a design system

import { defineConfig } from '@pandacss/dev';
import breakpointsPreset from '@amandaguthrie/panda-preset-breakpoints';

export default defineConfig({
  // ...
  presets: [
    // ... Other presets
    breakpointsPreset({ system: "primer" }),
  ],
  // ...
});
const primerPresetReturn = {
  theme: {
    extend: {
      breakpoints: {
        xs: '320px',
        sm: '544px',
        md: '768px',
        lg: '1012px',

Generate breakpoints that replace other breakpoints

The extend: false configuration option allows for replacement of other preset's breakpoint settings with the configuration defined in panda-preset-breakpoints.

If set to false, the preset will only overwrite the breakpoints area of the theme and not other theme properties. The following example uses @pandacss/preset-panda and the breakpoints preset with the material system.

preset-panda includes the breakpoints ["sm", "md", "lg", "xl", "2xl"]. The material system only includes ["xs", sm", "md", "lg", "xl"].

If the following example were using the default settings where extend: true, it would result in the material system keys and the 2xl breakpoint from preset-panda.

Instead, using extend: false, the resulting CSS generated for breakpoints will result in only the material system breakpoints.

import { defineConfig } from '@pandacss/dev';
import pandaPreset from "@pandacss/preset-panda";
import breakpointsPreset from '@amandaguthrie/panda-preset-breakpoints';

export default defineConfig({
  // ...
  presets: [
    // ... Other presets
    pandaPreset,
    breakpointsPreset({ system: "material", extend: false }),
  ],
  // ...
});
const materialOverwritePresetReturn = {
  theme: {
    breakpoints: {
      xs: '0',
      sm: '600px',
      md: '840px',
      lg: '1200px',
      xl: '1600px',
    }
  }
}
