ive done the same thing here in australia with kids in high school. i know theres been some great mental health research and programs, but unfortunately its too general to think that stopping or starting something is the one true answer for dealing with problems. and ive been as stubborn as anyone in staying pretty methodical in trying to identify the right answer.

the original project i did for tom started with the concept of doing what kids were doing to fit in and be accepted. but then i added a new concept, which was that i wanted to challenge the ideas that kids sometimes have about what makes them good or bad. the idea that you need to be perfect to be accepted. and so, i challenged that and it really worked.

i set up a curriculum for the kids, so they would always be challenged in what they did. and i incorporated a lot of really cool techniques in there. short cut keys, the dynamics control, fade, the move tool, masking, compositing, and many more. (they were about 14 to 16 years old at the time, and they did this on a mac pro running 10.4 )

i also gave them a lot of tools to help them process their feelings. like, they had a tool which encouraged them to think of themselves as a collection of different parts. and when they thought of that, they would be able to simply move from one part to another. and they could stop feeling overwhelmed.

and the third part to the whole thing was to really extend their abilities as artists. and so, in my video, the kids were learning about the lighting conditions. and how the lighting conditions affect the color of the image. 84d34552a1
