PCL6 is quite an old page description language and is seldom used by anyone. However, a few printers may still use PCL6: Most popular of these is the Hewlett-Packard OmniPage Professional, which was originally released in 1985. The OmniPage Professional is an offset, large-format, high-volume mailer duplicator. The code name for the software that runs on the OmniPage was Omnipage, which later evolved to the PostScript page description language. It should be noted that the OmniPage Professional version of PCL6 was actually developed by LaserSoft Inc, a Hewlett-Packard subsidiary. PCL6 is also referred to as PCL 6, PCL 6.0, PCL 6.2, PCL 6M, PCL 5.5, etc. 


PCL also creates PostScript files if the printer's software is PostScript-compatible. Most, if not all, of the popular desktop publishing software programs support PCL. Most of these programs are aimed at the home and office market and range from simple page layout programs such as Adobe's PageMaker or QuarkXPress to the Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Fireworks and Adobe Acrobat Professional graphics programs that can create a professional finished publication.


Windows XP and Windows 2000 will come with default printer drivers by default. Some will have problems with certain printers. Microsoft has provided a useful tool in the form of a website called the support.microsoft.com/gp/cdfreeprint.aspx to help you identify which drivers are compatible with the printers you have. You can find this in the Add/Remove Programs area, under a section called "Hardware and Devices". Select the 'Printers and scanners' tab and then click "View more drivers..." from the printer section.
