alesis' qs voice range is comprised of the qs1, qs2, qs3, qs6.2, qs6, and the voice chooser. these are all solid-bodied synths with excellent analogue emulation. alesis do have a couple of excellent virtual analogue synths, the qs5 and the qs5 duo. we'll leave those aside for now, since there will be time to explore those in later instalments of this guide. the qs range is however, becoming increasingly hard to find in shops - and that is the other very significant area in which it differs from its contemporaries. what makes the qs6.2 more valuable than the qs6.1, for example, is that the latter is almost the exact same synth in every respect, aside from that exotic 2.01 gb of voice sample data it comes with. but that extra data does make it an expensive proposition. for around £250, you can get the qs6.


for those who've been around this site for long, you'll know that i've had scores of arguments over the years about the strange soft-brick-wall attitude of alesis in their attitude to the qs series. for all their talk of how popular this kind of technology is, they still seem to think there are no market requirements for it, so there are no products on the shelves. and while i think that this is quite a good way to market their product, the fact is that lots of people are still in need of the feel of real drums, with sticks to play them. and although the qs series has already passed into the hands of their competitors, i still think there's a market for a more attractive and functional drum-centric answer to the qs series. like the ql100, which was a very successful instrument that never got a single release on its own, perhaps this market should be served by a newly-built version of the qs6.2. alesis, if you're reading this, i'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. in fact, if you're reading this, i'll happily be your tester. and if you're reading this, you'd better get on to it, or i'll be the tester for somebody else.. 84d34552a1
