Each of the three modules in the Workbook (Literary Studies, Theory of Culture, and Approaches to Teaching) includes three activities: Glossary, Vocabulary, and Contents. Each module also includes several supplementary modules such as Read, Listen, and Think. Along with the three key works of the course (Forster's Howards End and The Death of Ivan Ilyich, and Wharton's Ethan Frome), these modules allow the teacher to build the necessary knowledge and skills for teaching literature.
Most of the instructions for the teacher appear in the teacher's manual. The teacher's manual also contains a chapter on Instructional Design. This chapter provides teachers with some of the essential ingredients needed to design instruction that will best accomplish the goals of the various units of the workbook. It contains rich documentation on the determination of learning goals (attention, retention, understanding), and the articulation of objectives and methods for assessment. It also contains a sample instruction chapter of a teacher who has fully prepared her course, and it offers a rich source of information for others who are developing their own instruction.
Our paradox is that our most fragile piece of well-being is also the most fragile part of our world and ourselves. The world abandons us when we most care about it, and we forget who we are when the world forgets it. The lesson is not to despair, or to evade this truth, but to take it in, to wrestle with it, and to live it. I am not entirely confident that I can answer this question. But I trust that Wasser and her colleagues, and others like them, can. The work is in hand. 84d34552a1
