During this period, I read the following math drama, The Escape from Khan's Castle by Tom Johnson, a 20th Century American author. The work is well written and contains many great math problems. One problem that students enjoyed most was a problem about comparing fractions. The student saw that a large bag is double the size of a small bag and could say, Id like the smaller bag to have twice as much as the large bag. She chose this answer to indicate that the larger bag must also have been two times the size of the small bag. This problem allowed students to explore fractions by comparing their sizes in relation to the number. They also had a chance to use language of quotients. They could say that the smaller bag has a quotient of two.

A student presented me with a problem that was NOT a homework problem. That is, the student could not find an answer on the board. He suggested adding volume information to a proportion to show how to compare the same volumes of two different sizes of pails. He explained, No proportion is written the same way twice. One needs to know what volume is being compared so one can use the proper fraction to compare it to a different volume.

During this period, I read the following math drama, Ancient Dice by Tom Johnson, a 20th Century American author. The work is well written and contains many great math problems. The students eagerly awaited the beginning of this period when they were sure to find an interesting problem to work on with me.
