on the other hand, i absolutely loved the exploration aspect of revelations. the series has always been a big love letter to the city of venice, and the game tells a lot of stories about the city's history. the atmosphere of that world is something that has been lost in recent years. the city feels lonely. there are no other humans around. there are other races scattered around, but they're just there, perched on the side of a building, watching you from afar.


the city really reminds me of the original assassin's creed. the world is so gorgeous that it's easy to get lost in it for hours at a time. you can climb around to any part of the city and check out a broad selection of sights and shops. this time around, however, the game is more conscious of the fact that you're playing a game, and that's apparent in the way it handles the navigation. locations are marked on a map, but you don't get a proper route, like in previous games. instead, you're given a "discovery" route that points you in the direction of a new location.


one of the biggest changes revelations makes to the gameplay is the addition of the eagle vision. now, at any time, you can press the right analogue stick to see an eagle, from which you can survey the entire map. at a glance, you can see where you are, what enemies are nearby, and where you can hide. you can also pull up your map, and see where you are going. an eagle sight is always useful, but it's much less useful than the ability to see the surrounding area, and the location of any traps, with the press of a button.


in the new take on deathmatch, players have the option of "assassins" or "freelancer", and the former are far more powerful. these characters are the very best of the assassin's creed series, complete with super-charged weapons and supernatural abilities. they can use all of the normal stuff as well, but they have the addition of a special ability that can, if used correctly, allow them to eliminate an enemy from afar, with the power to execute the enemy instantly. all this means that it's a game where, for the best part of the game, the best characters can overwhelm the poor freelancers. 84d34552a1
