After a few months in the field, you get a feel for the quality of the local broadcast audio and how the system alters it. When you compare three successive field recordings, it is not difficult to see what is different and what is the same. A “bump” in the background is often noticeable. Sometimes this bump is within the presenter’s voice, and sometimes it is outside the presenter’s voice.
The difference between the two measurements can be explained by the audio equipment used, the location or the presenter. But let’s look a little closer. It seems the presenter is shouting louder in the first recording. But the filter of the room correction system works too well and it boosts his voice into the background. So, we have to change the filter. Let’s try again.
Other techniques used include automatic speech recognition, loudness correction, noise reduction, etc. All of these techniques are either run in the digital domain or in the analog domain. The audio chain is the real audio engine. In many cases the audio chain is hidden from view.
First, the room (or area) is measured. The measuring process is similar to when you measure a room for an A/V system and in that case the room is “read” by the room correction system. For audio, this is the actual audio engine of the room correction system. The room provides the number of vocal cords and the people in the room, and their positions, the height of their heads and whether the system is wired or wireless. The measuring process works out what is too loud (too much signal) and what is too soft (too little signal), and how these different frequencies are distributed in the audio spectrum. 84d34552a1
