The fact that the eight games Ozark Softscape made before Bubble Bobble had a tendency to be, shall we say, kinky was largely an unconscious choice by Bunten; he had the right temperament for making weird games, and the cool persona that might have earned him more respect and allowed him to distance himself from the harsh realities of game development. But even though he played a game like Ninja High School in secret with some friends, Bunten wasn't interested in creating weirdness for its own sake. His games were meant to be fun, with a sense of urgency he felt only when he was making blockbuster games for major publishers.

Buntens style was playful and straightforward, and that was the attitude that endeared Bunten to players and publishers alike. Heart of Africa and its expansion pack Heart of Lusaka (both released in 1986) hewed closely to the arcade version of Frogger, with a simple, linear structure and a series of limited objectives. But Bunten could make a more linear game like Heart of Africa more fun to play than a game as freeform as Bubble Bobble.

Many of Bunten most memorable games are like Bubble Bobble: they're easier than Bubble Bobble but more difficult than Bubble Bobble 2, and there are some aspects of Bubble Bobble 2 that Bunten could never recreate for himself. But Bunten became more successful than Bunten the designer could have ever anticipated. His Bubble Bobble was a major hit, the bestselling game of 1987, and even a commercial success. In later years, Bunten wrote extensively about the ways in which he had changed as a developer and publisher in the twelve years since Bubble Bobble was released. The decade leading up to Bubble Bobble had been completely transitional, he felt, and he began with a sense of pessimism about the future of game development. He explained that he never wrote a single book because, after Bullet Frogger, he decided to spend all his time doing games, and decided to stop taking phone calls from writers. He was lucky, he believed, that Bubble Bobble was a commercial success, and that he had time left over to write music, create videos, and develop his first web site, AllGames.com, for game fans. The popularity of arcade games like Bubble Bobble encouraged Bunten to develop more of the same, leading to games like Bubble Bobble 2 that were larger, more sophisticated, more complex, and more demanding on players' time. Many of Bunten's games had a playful, cartoonish look and feel, although he later admitted that his goal when he began designing the games was to be "a Dad who could actually fit in. 84d34552a1
