Its all very alpha. This was the first Age of Apocalypse, they were still figuring out what they were doing. Its not until a few issues in that the Foes recognize that they need to fight the X-men too, and send out the Thunderbolts at the team.

All-in-all, the AoA stuff is good. The first thing you run into is Cyclops and Havok, who now run the X-men in place of Jean and Banshee. The reason for this is unclear. Cyclops is still alive, Jean has been missing for a long time. Before that this team was kind of incompetent. The other big change is that the Age of Apocalypse universe has become the permanent home of all mutants. This continues the trends of X-men since AoA, the X-men have become a much more integral part of the larger Marvel universe, not just a mutant-hunting team.

No real downside to the series, in fact some of the best comics have come out of these events. The X-men now have costumes and a base of operations, we saw Beast and the X-Men go to The Savage Land for some time, there are multiple teams including the Guardians of the Galaxy. I recommend it if your a lover of comics, but dont read anything before age of Apocalypse to understand it.

So why not read it first The comics in Dawn were all published after Age of Apocalypse had already started and generally assume you have some knowledge of the AoA universe. Personally, I think these issues work much better as flashbacks, as you take a break from the Age of Apocalypse to see how we get here in the first place.
