The FORUM selected Professor Haruo Hirao, Hamamatsu University, Japan, as the recipient of the 2014 Young Investigator Award. With this award, the FORUM is recognizing Dr. Hiras outstanding contributions in the areas of computational combustion, fire engineering, and fire protection, and its application to assist the development of new building construction materials and fire protection design.

The FORUM selected Professor Shigeru Kubota, U. of Tokyo, Japan, as the recipient of the 2013 Young Investigator Award. With this award, the FORUM is recognizing Prof. Kubota outstanding contributions in the areas of fire dynamics, especially in the areas of thermal convection in combustion and the mechanism and performance of thermal insulation of wooden panels. Over the years, Prof. Kubota has performed detailed research on the analysis of the heat transfer characteristics of walls in one- and three-dimensional as well as the flow field of the buoyant heat transfer of the wall surface with turbulent mixing. He also has extensive understanding of structural heat transfer which was aided by his contributions to the development of computer codes. He has led collaborative projects on the insulation of wooden buildings which have contributed to the creation of a national standard for constructing wooden buildings and the specifications of the fire protection of wooden buildings.

The FORUM selected Professor Yoshinobu Inoue, Kyushu University, Japan, as the recipient of the 2012 Young Investigator Award. With this award, the FORUM is recognizing Prof. Inoue’s outstanding contributions in the areas of thermal engineering and the fire safety of building construction materials. For more than 30 years Prof. Inoue has been researching the heat transfer behavior of combustible materials such as timber, concrete, and natural materials (e.g., sand), and he has conducted large-scale experiments to characterize the heat transfer behavior of these materials, which have helped in the creation of new standards for building construction materials. In addition to conducting fundamental research on the heat transfer of these materials, he also has developed practical fire test standards for new fire protection requirements. 84d34552a1
