originally, radical dreamers was intended to be a marketing tool for the release of the chrono trigger ds in 2008, and the finished game itself was never intended to be completed, kato says. the game's development was that of an independent project, and only after the release of the game was it decided to release radical dreamers as chrono trigger ds. 


as a result, the game itself, which is meant to be a direct continuation from the game, doesn't quite fit the chrono trigger mold. radical dreamers's main character, lang, is a human who was trapped in the castle, while the main characters from the original game are all machines. but that's not even a major issue, as lang was a secondary character in his own right, and kato simply chose to do things differently. the game was to be a "fusion" of both the original game and radical dreamers, but kato considered the game incomplete, not wanting to release it unfinished.

"but it was a work that took just three months, so i didn't have time to finish it so i decided to release it as it is as the director's cut." he says there's no release date planned for the final version of radical dreamers, and "everyone will be able to see it when it's released." according to kato, the final version of radical dreamers is much closer to chrono trigger ds, so it's really chrono trigger in a different guise.
