Whenever I spoke to Sir Robert, I liked him; he had no pretension, and wasalways quite ready to listen. As he told me of the first aeroplane he ever owned, heexclaimed: ‘We should have a party to celebrate the day!’ Then came quite a conversationabout wonderful times gone by, and I learnt how much of the greatest of the pioneer aviatorshe had known: ‘You remember, Mr. Gower,’ she said, ‘your friend Felix Zelembow?’ ‘Yes,’I said, ‘I recall that he was commissioned by Sir Wilfrid Lawson to design a monoplanefor great distances.’ ‘I remember him well,’ she said. ‘He was the first to fly from Englandto France, in a monoplane constructed entirely on my father’s orders, and most expensively, too, in full his own concern. I wish it had been successful. It broke its engine just afew miles from Paris, and Sir Wilfrid died of a heart attack before it was finished. What apromise!’ I often saw Felix at school, and his appearance then was littlebefitting an Englishman flying the Channel, his round face and black moustacheand beard in close relationship to his French wife. When I tried to picture her inher husband’s seat, I saw a much older person.’I said, ‘He would have been a fine pilot, to be sure.’ ‘He was,’ she said.‘I have his letter, in my desk.’ ‘Where can it be found?’ I asked. ‘That is not an easy matter. The captain entrusted a large sum of money to an unscrupulous agent, and the letterbelongs to him. It is locked in the safe, but I can easily obtain it.’ ‘Let us have the letter then,’I said, ‘and I will see what I can do to help.’ That night, after Sir Robert hadretired to bed, I called the Captain on the telephone and asked if he could come down tomy house and let me have the document. After a little hesitation, he did. He lookedvery surprised. Was he about to commit a breach of trust? I took out my steel knife, opened thesafe, gave the key to the Captain, and we retired to the office. Then, when we hadgone on the lawn together, the Captain showed me the letter, and I read through,‘a French ironclad first-class letter’, which astonished me as much as I hadthought to see it. How Felix Zelembow had been engaged, I cannot tell; but itthere was no doubt that he had been asked to design an aeroplane. He had written to tellher about it, and had arrived a few days later to discuss it with her. ‘I see,’I said, ‘he has spent some of this money already on his beautiful invention. But even at the last moment, he could only come from very far. He musthave been pretty well tired out.’ The Captain looked very grave. ‘Who are you talking about, Mr.Gower?’ he asked. ‘Sir Wilfrid Lawson. He died of a heart attack in the seaplane before Felix Zelembow had finished it.’Then he took a long breath. ‘That is a story I told you once about the beautiful letter,’ he said. ‘I have never told it to any other living person. 84d34552a1
