code vein makes the most of its own unique features to convey a feeling of 'the journey' better than anything else. it's not enough to simply toss you into the first area and ask you to explore, because there are no tools at your disposal to help you see what's going on. you'll have to wander around with a torch, a compass and a piece of paper that you draw on with a dry-erase pen. this might not sound like a huge deal, but i find it's a surprisingly effective way to convey how much the player is in control of the story.

as you explore, you'll find helpful npcs that give you some helpful information. you'll find treasure chests and hidden rooms, which contain trinkets, herbs and rare items. and even more importantly, you'll find other players, who will sometimes hang out in their own rooms and will occasionally join you if you're in their general area. you can talk to them, and they will offer to join you on your adventures, including if you come across other players you don't know.

the way players are handled is actually one of the game's biggest strengths. you can start off in a group of players from your home realm, and simply join other groups that are around. the community that's built up in the game is pretty healthy, which makes finding other players a real joy. you can join people who have a lot of experience, or people who have just started playing. what's more, if you're the leader of a group, you can choose to split off from it if you're not enjoying the experience.

the dialogue system is a bit of a mess. at first, i found that i would simply hit spacebar when the game prompted me for a response. that's kind of a cheat, because it just makes everyone in your group respond as if it's you. 84d34552a1
