the controls are a bit of a pain at first, especially if you're used to third-person shooters. you're either holding the right button to jump and look down, or the left button to run and look up. the right analog stick is used for aiming, left for movement and right bumper for firing. you only have a limited number of shots, and your weapon will deplete as you use it, so the weapons usually require that you use up one of your five lives before you start firing. in order to replenish your ammo and lives you can always find boxes throughout the levels, but they can be a real nuisance. sometimes they're just hiding in plain sight, and you might be halfway through a level when you notice there are dino crisis powerups lying on the floor. or even the best of the best are behind locked doors, or are hidden in the back of a locker.


the game has a consistent structure, with players often going to the map and laying out a path to their exit. however, because of the many varied story sections, gameplay is never quite the same. with each story, players progress through the game and obtain new weapons, various items and vehicles for their character. the game is primarily focused on exploration with an occasional shootout with a monster.
