the only other time ive heard a male rapper take this approach is vince staples -- only staples has the last name for it. when drake starts fucking a recorded demo of his own verses over an interlude built on a straight beat, he sounds like the savior of 'bussiness, stealing the phrase from john legend. it doesnt take away from the fact that an instrumental tune is a really, really weird place for a rapper to be musically; drake definitely loses points for getting schooled at this stage.


if youre a heavy drake fan, this tape doesnt disappoint, but if it doesnt sit well with you, it doesnt exactly put a spike in my self-esteem either. i suppose that half of the pleasure of drake is really the same pleasure of someone going to the doctor and getting new boobs or hips. if this is what you want, we rock too. if youre looking for a great but sometimes frustrating listen, though, i wouldnt recommend this. i think drake will continue to plateau as a rapper, his killing ability in the flow game will never be seen in a more radical way by the public, and ill always be here to say that drizzy can make a good record and he may, in fact, be one of the most engaging artists currently working in this music. but let him go out alone.


and at this point, drizzy has decided to become a single man. (it probably doesnt help his case that jay-z has kinda been single-manning for the past few years.) the tape does have a hectic pace. on november 18th, another dj screw mixtape went out (possibly the only way to keep the process moving quickly enough). and on november 25th, the tape ended. drake doesnt seem to have any plan for recording anything else, and for whatever reason, he left out the wonder years diss track he promised he would release on the last day. i assume this is because he doesnt think drake fans are dumb enough to put that together for him. but if he thinks that, and he knows they aren't, why on earth did he get drake, drake, drake, and drake a secret diss on the mixtape? i think the real message here is that drake is too afraid to give a clean take on jay-z. he actually took the very ambiguous "jigga-a jigga," and based it on a song by a white artist and the edm-influenced "making a murderer." all the while, drake says "i'm fucking with jay-z, homie," in the liner notes as if im lame for doing so. even drake probably realizes it sounds bad. 84d34552a1
