the ipc has received the mandate from the ministry of health and family welfare, government of india, to evolve pharmacopoeial standards to protect the health of the people of india. it has constituted a pharmacopoeial committee to develop the standards, and sub-committees to develop standards for the individual pharmacopoeia of india. the committee and the sub-committees have been given adequate time to complete their work in a time-bound manner. the work of the committee was initiated in the year 1999, and the first sub-committee was constituted in the year 2001. the work of the first sub-committee was completed and published in the year 2002, and the first edition of the indian pharmacopoeia was published in the year 2004. the present sub-committee has been constituted since the year 2009. it is expected that the sub-committee will complete its work within the stipulated time and the ipc will be able to make an announcement with regard to the publication of the second edition of the indian pharmacopoeia. the ipc is monitoring the progress of this work on an ongoing basis.


the ipc is also working on its own self-regulated pharmacopoeial system in response to the demands from the industry and the community. the ipc has initiated the development of standards for laboratory analysis of medicines. it has also initiated the development of standards for manufacturing, testing, evaluation and packaging of medicines. the ipc has set up a group to improve the testing and evaluation of pharmaceuticals. it has initiated the development of standards to prevent the abuse of medicines by young children and to improve the quality of medicines sold in pharmacies. 84d34552a1
