EDSS Calculator

The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is the most common clinical scoring system used to evaluate the condition of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. The overall disability score ranges from 0 (normal) to 10 (death due to MS) in half-point increments

The scale has been developed by John F. Kurtzke. The EDSS quantifies disability in eight Functional Systems (FS) and allows neurologists to assign a Functional System Score (FSS) in each of these.

Install

Install with npm:

$ npm install --save edss

Usage example

const  edss = require('edss');

// calculateEDSS(visualFunctionsScore, brainstemFunctionsScore, pyramidalFunctionsScore, cerebellarFunctionsScore,
// sensoryFunctionsScore, bowelAndBladderFunctionsScore, cerebralFunctionsScore, ambulationScore)

const  edssResult = edss.calculateEDSS(1,2,1,3,1,4,2,1);
// edssResult = 4

Demo

Demo is avaliable on GitHub Pages for this repository, right here.

About the project

This project is an open source implementation of the EDSS Calculator in Javascript. While developing a registry for patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, in Montenegro, a need arose for implementing an EDSS Calculator as an additional assessment when entering data related to patient visit to the registry.

As there was no open source implementation of the algorithm available I decided to make my own, and help other people who might make a web or mobile application for patients or physicians who deal with Multiple Sclerosis or EDSS calculations.

Arguments

This module exports calculateEDSS function, which takes eight arguments.

Arguments in order are:

argumenttyperange
visualFunctionsScorenumber0 - 6
brainstemFunctionsScorenumber0 - 5
pyramidalFunctionsScorenumber0 - 6
cerebellarFunctionsScorenumber0 - 5
sensoryFunctionsScorenumber0 - 6
bowelAndBladderFunctionsScorenumber0 - 6
cerebralFunctionsScorenumber0 - 5
ambulationScorenumber0 - 16

Calculation

EDSS range is 0 to 10, in half point increments. Values above 5 are calculated solely based on ambulation score. Values from 0 to 5 are more complex, I relied on "Scoring table for a standardised, quantified neurological examination and assessment of Kurtzke‘s Functional Systems and Expanded Disability Status Scale in Multiple Sclerosis" by Ludwig Kappos, MD from University Hospital Basel, Switzerland.

Table used to calculate scores determined by functional systems

Functional systems and ambulation score

In this section I will provide tables of values and labels ( explanations ) for each individual functional system score and ambulation score.

The module also exports array with objects ( value, label properties ) for each functional system and ambulation score. It makes it easier to implement consistent scoring systems. The name of arrays are next to system names in brackets
