eleme

An eleme ("eliim") is a native or custom element that can render itself efficiently. It includes a few shortcut methods for composing elements together.

Use

require('eleme');

This prepares the DOM environment and attaches eleme to window.

Example

<app-root></app-root>
eleme({
  name: 'app-root',
  init: function() {
    this.counter = 0;
    this.increment();
    this.on('click', this.increment);
  },
  increment: function() {
    this.counter++;
    this.update();
  },
  update: function() {
    this.render('<button>'+this.counter+'</button>');
  }
});

Constructor

eleme() takes an object with the following properties. It returns a new or existing element.

name

Name can be any of the following:

  • Native element tag: div, a, etc. This creates a new instance of the element.

  • Custom element tag: must have - in the name. If there is a custom element of the same name in the DOM already, it will be extended. If not, it will return a new instance.

  • Existing element ID: #element - will extend it.

init (optional) - function to run on init

Additional methods can be provided, and they will have this binding to the element instance.

Quick construct

For a shorter syntax, use: eleme( name, init ) or eleme( name, obj )

eleme('app-root', function() {
  this.render( template );
  this.on('ping', function(e) {
    this.emit('pong', e.detail);
  });
});

You can also pass an entire tag or template as the name.

eleme('<input type="password">', function() {
  this.on('change', doSomething);
});

It must have a single root. If the root is a custom element, it will be registered if it hasn't already.

Instance methods

The returned element is extended with the following methods.

render - perform incremental DOM update with given HTML string

clone - create a new element based on current one

emit, on, off, once - event shortcuts

Element methods

All HTML elements will have these shortcuts:

query, queryAll, prepend, append

eleme itself has the above methods as an alias to document.body. It also has event shortcuts, so it can be used as an event hub for the whole application.

Template

The browserify transform stringify is recommended for keeping template HTML in its own file.

var template = require('app.html');

eleme('app-root', function() {
  this.render( template );
});
