the use of abdominal binders has become common practice after surgery. the two largest trials in this regard show that a binder is more effective in relieving pain and more effective in mobilizing the patient in the early postoperative period. the use of a binder is associated with significantly less postoperative pain, less sedation, and a reduction in the incidence of postoperative vomiting. binder patients returned to work earlier and were less likely to be out of work compared with placebo patients. there is no clear evidence from the trials that a binder reduces pain, itching, length of hospital stay, or incisional hernia formation. more research is needed to identify the optimal binder system for postsurgical patients.

a randomized trial of binders was the first to evaluate the effect of postoperative vertical bandage in patients undergoing laparotomy. patients in the binder group used an elastic compression garment for 2 weeks, followed by a standard adhesive bandage for another 2 weeks. patients in the control group were provided with no postoperative support. it showed that wounds healed more rapidly and that their appearance was more consistent with each other in the binder group, in accordance with other research. the authors concluded that an elastic bandage, in conjunction with surgical intervention, provided better wound healing 41. however, the article was subject to a flaw in that it had no statement of the grading of the elastic compression garment, which should always be clearly specified and clearly reported. also, the study was too small to allow analysis of the effects of the compression garment on iap or venous stasis in a manner that was independent of the anastomotic line and other factors. 84d34552a1
