that is the direction we have to work in in order to ensure the future for the human race, and it's a very optimistic one. the latter part of that sentence reminds me of a schoolgirl i knew who was convinced that computers were going to make life better and that everything would just sort itself out. i'm happy to say that my own belief in the grand narratives of the past no longer holds this kind of naive optimism. i think the idea of a humanistic narrative is being discredited, and we're able to connect in ways we had never done before. we're creating a new world we cannot even imagine, and it's like a cornucopia that defies belief. i'm happy that i will have something to say when i die, even though that's an embarrassment to say so. if the internet is changing things in the way i hope it is, then it will be a reflection of a new world in a way that will make sense to me, and that's my only goal.

one of the most fascinating explorations of the internet is a search through it's semantic content, a journey through the 'hypertext' in the form of the massive knowledge graph. a human-curated, crowd-sourced repository of meaning, it has been generating the same sort of results that google does for a couple of years now. to begin a search, and provide a context for it, just type what you are looking for. for example, if you type 'what time is it?' you get the answer, 'noon' and a list of other possibilities: what day is it? what time zone is it in? what time zone is bucharest in? and so on. even better, you can type 'what is the capital of?' and be shown millions of results on national capitals. it's so easy to find what you want, it feels like cheating. but what's really remarkable about it is that the same algorithm that recommends one thing also recommends related things. by passing you on to other sites, it can lead you on. the result is that it produces the same sort of results that people on printed books are used to, but with a half-million times the speed. 84d34552a1
