HITMAN: ABSOLUTION lets players take on the role of Agent 47, a legendary assassin driven by revenge. Players will hunt down the remaining wanted targets of the Agency in a world on the brink of chaos. Immerse yourself in all the sights and sounds of this dark and twisted world. As a professional contract killer, players will use a variety of murder tools to execute those individuals that stand in the way of their mission.

The game also introduces an online option to Hitman series ,'Contracts Mode ', where players can create their own missions for other players to complete.Players choose one of the areas from the game's story missions and decide which NPC's are required to be eliminated, what weapon must be used to eliminate each target, what disguise is required, whether the body must be hidden or not and if the player is allowed to be spotted by the enemies. They then simply upload the mission to the servers to be played out by other players. Players can choose from one of four weapons available to them at the start of the mission, and if the mission is successful, the player is rewarded with in-game currency used to purchase upgrades or weapons, which can then be used to play another mission.

As a deep undercover operative for the Agency, you are backed by a team of the most elite of agents. You are the best, and no one is going to find out otherwise. You are known only as Agent 47, and no one has any idea of your true abilities as an assassin. Only those who are loyal to the Agency can help you. And the only way for them to do this is to keep silent, and live as you do. The pay is good, and the risks almost nonexistent, so there is no going back.
