Though the OSM map looks great with some of the Garmin maps enhancements, certain ones like heatmap data and traffic layer really take advantage of the map being OSM. As you can see from the bottom images, when I select a route on the left, the right gives me a detailed and accurate routing of that very way. This image was taken back in May of this year, just a few weeks ago (and just before people started asking for for a US map). Thats the good news, however this good news is tempered a bit by the fact that as I was writing this up, in June 13, Garmin rolled out a new set of firmware for the Europe region of the Edge. One problem is that its firmware now does not accept Edge for their paid maps. I dont know if you have read the original article about the Edge, but its pretty explicit that you can use the paid maps as long as theyre in ISO format, and you can read the tech articles. So Ive tried a couple of places to order the files directly, but none of them are accepting credit card, only Paypal or Amazon payment methods. This is a must have device, and when theyre having business problems with it, it makes me want to be a bit wary about using the Edge.


Thanks for this, saved my bacon! I bought my Edge 530 in Thailand and ended up with the Asia version. Wanted to get the Europe map too, but its not offered through any of the Garmin Asia websites and trying to buy through US or UK sites didnt work for residents of Thailand! Why do Garmin make it so hard On Wahoo this is just a couple of clicks and is free. Also the Asia version of the 530 only gets a 6 month old version of firmware (7.10 v 8.20 at the time of writing) when compared with the rest of the world. I eventually got UK maps loaded from Frikart. The servers in the article above had a 200 plus day queue for map processing, All very messy. My first purchase of a Garmin device. Really very frustrated at this stage and its hard to get refunds with Thailand retail law and culture. Must research more thoroughly next time 84d34552a1
