halo has been releasing music under the name halo lately. i think the reason for the name change was that i was trying to get a different perspective on things. i wanted to be a different person, and to have a different voice. i couldnt get the perspective i wanted in a halo identity.
it was the label boss at hyperdub, who got halo in contact with lazarus, who came in to produce the record. halo describes him as a great producer. he has a strong understanding of dynamics and a sense of time that makes it easy to work with him. i think that hes very interested in the idea of music as a process, halo says, which resonated with me. i like people who have a kind of ethic about their process.
lazarus said its a very different production than halo has done before. i hope its something that will challenge the way that i record. its very important for me to make something that pushes me to be a better musician. i can almost think of the record as a process - it kind of has a beginning and end but its not structured in that way. its really about getting all these elements and sounds together that make up the whole record.
when halo was making quarantine she wanted to take the idea of the blues and jazz a step further and make it more like she imagined it could be. i started to imagine that my songs were actually happening. so the lyrics are very narrative. on this record its very clear that i had a destination in mind. dust is a record of my life.
as halo came to the end of a touring schedule with quarantine, she started to focus on dust. she was in this cycle of finding out how to make her next album. she had a lot of ideas in her head and she took it easy and gradually made it over the course of a few years. it started in the studio with a new friend who produced the album. after that, i brought on lazarus and other friends to add more sounds and textures. it was a slow process. 84d34552a1
