it is said that one must know his audience. that is true in all aspects of life and business, but especially in the church. you need to know who your people are, what they like, what they dont like, how they think, and what they dont think. if you want to reach them, what will they actually like? you need to think outside the box. you need to embrace your audience and come up with ways for them to hear the bible in a context that speaks to them.

i am always amazed at the wide variety of people that know little about the heart of the christian faith. we have heard in the past the phrase that the the bible was written by four different authors, god, moses, paul, and john. this is not true, but this is exactly why the four gospels record the life of jesus, john records the life of the disciples, paul records the life of the church, and luke records the life of paul. each of these four people were able to record the events that they saw and knew firsthand. were you saved under the ministry of john the baptist, or under the ministry of jesus? were you saved through the preaching of paul the apostle, or through the ministry of peter and the other apostles? were you saved through the ministry of the prophets and apostles of the first century or through the ministry of the apostles of the second century? god did not write the bible. he did not speak to four people and then write it down. he spoke to people and they wrote it down.

paul has been one of the most influential preachers of the english language, and his writings are essential to understanding the heart of the faith. paul laid out in his letters a defense of the faith and a call to convert to christ. paul told the church to pray for one another, and he himself prayed for them (1 thess.5:14-18). paul told church leaders to be an example, a light, and a sound. he also warned them not to copy the myths of the surrounding culture, and not to leave the faith or teach false doctrine (colossians 2:8). he never used the phrase take the whole of scripture, but rather used the phrase take its teaching. 84d34552a1
