the regenerator burns the coke with oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, which is used to “regenerate” the catalyst by regenerating the catalyst from the carbon. the coke is burned in the regenerator by burning oil in a process called oxidation. through the combustion of oil, more carbon is added to the catalyst. in order to burn the coke, air is added to the catalyst. the oxygen combines with some of the carbon in the catalyst to produce water. some of the carbon and oxygen reacts to form carbon monoxide. the co and water react to form carbon dioxide.

one or more of the processes are performed using conventional techniques and equipment. a typical catalyst regenerator in a low-pressure fcc unit will burn approximately 7-8% of the catalyst to carbon dioxide, water, and carbon monoxide. the carbon dioxide and water are naturally recovered in the flue gas. the carbon monoxide is combusted on the hot regenerator atmosphere to form carbon dioxide and heat. this coke is burned at a temperature greater than 600° f in the regenerator.

the fuel and air are initially mixed. the fuel is introduced into the lower end of the reactor. fresh catalyst is fed through a dip tube so that it is suspended in the oil and trays or bubble caps up in the reactor. as the reactor is operating, the catalyst settles through the feed and up through the riser. the catalyst and oil come out of the riser and into the disengaging vessels, where the catalyst and oil are separated. in the disengaging vessels, the catalyst is separated from the oil and carried to the regenerator by a blower in the upper part of the disengaging vessel. the catalyst and air enter the lower end of the regenerator. air and fuel are mixed and are combusted to produce flue gas. the flue gas and catalyst come out of the regenerator and into the cyclones. some of the particles in the flue gas are carried into the cyclones and some are carried through the catalyst return. the cyclones separate the catalyst and gas. the cyclones are an integral part of the fcc unit. 84d34552a1
