at the time of the conquest of the promised land, heshbon was a city-state under the control of sihon king of the amorites. it was located east of the jordan river (1 chron. 4:19). in the time of the judges it was one of four major cities of gilead, along with gibeon, mizpah and ramoth-gilead. the philistines captured heshbon in the early part of the 11thcent. (judg. 10:8; 1 chron. 5:24).
the medieval persian historian abu-al-fida (1326–1350 ad) wrote that the city was "situated five miles from the jordan on the border between the tribes of reuben and gad" (peters, p. 421). the city was once called kusehbaronah ("the fortress of heshbon").
the ancient amorite ruler of heshbon was named sihon. he is called a king in 2 kings 23:31, and a ruler of the ammonites in 1 chronicles 27:7. he had two sons: og and rezon. the amorites occupied heshbon until the early 11thcent. (2 chron. 20:28; 2 kings 23:29; 1 chron. 4:19).
the amorite king sihon of heshbon conquered the transjordanian tribes of gad, reuben and manasseh and came to the aid of og, king of bashan. he besieged and captured the transjordanian cities of debir, ashtaroth and jazer. he also captured the cities of the avvites and the caphtorites and laid them waste. sihon laid waste the land of heshbon up to the eastern border, as far as the ammonites. joshua 12:1-2; 1 chron. 4:21-22; num. 21:21-35;
the first major pilgrim site in northern israel, heshbon was on the northern shore of the sea of galilee and was the home of the tribe of naphtali. from this location the first round of the transjordanian campaign was launched by joshua, while the israelite army advanced from the north, towards the city of ai. the city was set ablaze, and the israelites made slaves of its inhabitants. the city of heshbon was mentioned 12 times in the book of joshua (and probably later in the book of judges), and was said to have been a major city in the time of the judges (judges 19:15-18, 21:3, 24:27, 25:8, 26:8, 32:1-2). 84d34552a1
