the momentum generated by hype helps a movie do well at the box office. but how does this apply to the release of a film on dvd? will the inclusion of the film on a home video release automatically guarantee a film a place in the home video top 50? no, not at all. the reason that the home video top 50 has become a controversial criterion is because it seems to have a winner-takes-all effect on the all-important award for best film dvd at the academy awards. the first criteria for such awards is whether or not the film is a hit in the home video market. if it is, then that is the end of the eligibility race. the purpose of the home video top 50 is to identify a list of the most popular titles in the home video marketplace. is this a problem? not really, but it is. it can lead to voters favoritism because they tend to vote for films that they have purchased instead of finding out if the film has kept them engrossed or not. is it fair to have a commercial criterion enter into the decision-making process as a factor? not entirely. but a more sophisticated use of the home video top 50 would allow for a less biased, less commercial decision. 84d34552a1
