i originally launched this “unit” in 2014, however, over the course of the following 2 years i changed the game. in my last year teaching the game, i created a total of 13 lessons which effectively taught some 40 units. i had a bit of a tough lesson to wrap up the year, namely, the one where i taught my students about speed, a unit that my high school students would define as “wrong.”

in the fall of 2016, as i was creating this resource, i had to make a decision: should the lessons focus only on the mathematical concept of “the meaning of pi,” a new unit that i created, or should the lessons focus on a different aspect of pi?

after discussion with the teacher learning institute, it was decided that we would use pi to teach the lesson. pi is known as a symbol that ties math to the real world. pi is a measurement, and so students are able to see and recognize numbers in a way that seems intuitive.

for this reason, i designed this whole school unit around “learning with one thought.” students are immersed in curriculum that challenges them, but also helps them to the grasp the mathematical reasoning.

i teach math to grade 6th-9th. i teach elementary school and i have experience teaching middle school math too. i teach my students in a traditional class. my classrooms are not really differentiated. there is really no need to differentiate in many of the subjects. i do have students who are on the “f” grade. i have students who struggle with math. i have students who feel that they do not like math.

after reading the book each student will write his or her questions on sticky notes. students will decide on an order they want to get the questions answered. each student will record his or her own questions in the order that he or she wants to read. after reading the book i will ask students to share their understanding of the facts they discovered and write their questions and answers in an outline format. 84d34552a1
