the large hpc scientific and academic user communities can be an undifferentiated group of scientists and engineers. this community is commonly the primary user group for the facilities on which the hpc resources are built. user surveys and interviews can be used to uncover the specific needs of the user communities of the hpc facilities. we conducted a user survey of users of the national energy research supercomputing center (nersc)'s cori, a hpc resource designed and deployed to support the next generation of high performance computing in computational science. the survey results reveal a heterogeneous user community, made up of both scientists and engineers. the engineers are using cori to support a broad set of applications and are using the compute nodes as well as the network and storage infrastructure to support them. the scientists are using cori to solve more specialized problems and in some cases the scientists are using the compute nodes but use the network and storage infrastructure to share data and results.
