this article attempts to understand the structure of the interrelation between yin and yang and the two states in which the two compenstates a family. it is based on the assumption that the classical chinese view of the family was in its historical development a reflection of the dynamic interaction between these two states. yin-yang duality is often equated with the medical concept of the struggle of yin and yang within a person. it is therefore understandable that this concept has become an important theme in chinese philosophy. at the same time, the yin-yang duality does not include the parents-child relationship as it is the only conscious reason for human existence. in the tao te ching the synthesis of yin-yang is seen in the concept of the dao which is said to be both feminine and masculine. this concept, however, is too wide and ill defined to serve as a plausible explanation of human behavior. moreover, it does not give any insight in the transformation process when the yin-yang duality of a person becomes a yin-yang couple. the history of the chinese concept of the family offers some clues about the transformations which may have occurred during the centuries. 84d34552a1
