jasmine-then

Improved async testing in Jasmine via promises.

JasmineThen allows you to return promises from your jasmine specs.

How it works

If you're using plain ol' jasmine 2.x, this is about as simple as you can make it:

describe("My Module", function(done){

  it("Does some async thing", function(done){
    var promise = someAsyncFunction();
    promise.catch(function(error){
      expect(error).toBeUndefined();
    });
    promise.finally(done);
  });

});

But with jasmine-then, things are a bit simpler:

describe("My Module", function(done){
  var spec = JasmineThen.Spec(this);

  spec.it("Does some async thing", function(){
    return someAsyncFunction();
  });

});

Promises can also be returned from beforeEach and afterEach:

describe("My Module", function(done){
  var spec = JasmineThen.Spec(this);

  spec.beforeEach(function(){
    return someAsyncSetup();
  });

  spec.it("Does some async thing", function(){
    return someAsyncFunction();
  });

  spec.afterEach(function(){
    return someAsyncCleanup();
  });

});

For Jasmine 1.3.x users

If you're still using Jasmine 1.3.x, install version 0.1.x of jasmine-then:

bower install jasmine-then#0.1.x

Then you can return promises from your specs as described above, or your specs can accept a done callback, just like in Jasmine 2.x:

describe("an async spec", function(){

  // set up the async spec
  var async = new AsyncSpec(this);

  // run an async setup
  async.beforeEach(function(done){
    doSomething();

    // simulate async stuff and wait 10ms
    setTimeout(function(){

      // more code here
      doMoreStuff();

      // when the async stuff is done, call `done()`
      done();

    }, 10);
  });

  // run an async cleanup
  async.afterEach(function(done){
    // simulate async cleanup
    setTimeout(function(){

      done(); // done with the async stuff

    }, 10);
  });

  // run an async expectation
  async.it("did stuff", function(done){

    // simulate async code again
    setTimeout(function(){

      expect(1).toBe(1);

      // all async stuff done, and spec asserted
      done();

    });

  });

});

Developer setup

jasmine-then uses grunt and bower.

Set up grunt and bower (as if you don't have them already)

  • npm install -g grunt-cli - Install tiny grunt command-line runner
  • npm install -g bower - Install bower for pulling in test/example dependencies

Install dev dependencies (Don't worry! jasmine-then has no runtime dependencies except for jasmine itself.)

  • npm install - installs grunt and plugins
  • bower install - installs test/example dependencies

Grunt tasks

  • grunt jshint - lints the code
  • grunt test - runs jasmine-then specs via testem and phantomjs
  • grunt - runs both the jshint and test tasks
