the mans inability to fight the weather forces upon him is such an unenviable position. although he carries a gun, he loses his gun and freezes to death. in this situation, he isnt helpless; he doesnt have to stand a chance against the elements. in fact, the coldness of nature does its best to destroy the mans body. he succumbs to the cold because he is too slow to think. when he works all day, then lies in his bunk all night, he will have to stuff his mouth with biscuits to avoid the rotting of his stomach. he cant eat real food because his teeth have grown brittle. can you imagine that? biting into real bread or chewing on meat will break his teeth and i cant even picture this mans mouth. eating is the last thing he wants to do, but he doesnt have any choice. his teeth have become unsound and his stomach cannot handle the rest of his diet. in order for him to avoid starvation, he must live on something that will keep him alive, but he cant stand the taste. the dog doesnt have these problems because it eats only when it pleases. when its hungry it will gnaw down the wood of a tree, and it may lay down and go to sleep in the snow just to warm itself up. it doesnt need to build a fire in the winter, but the mans stomach might kill him. he prefers a weak, safe, and slave-like condition over the prospect of wild and dangerous freedom. 84d34552a1
