Japan mounted a thrilling comeback win over Mexico on Monday night in their semifinal matchup, and that means Japan and Team USA will meet in the finals of the 2023 World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night. Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly will start the game on the mound for the USA, while left-hander Shota Imanaga gets the nod for Japan.

Japan, who remains undefeated in the 2023 WBC, secured their place in the “final four” with a convincing 9-3 win over Italy. Mexico, on the other hand, is playing in the semifinals for the first time in their history after pulling off a nail-biting 5-4 upset victory over Puerto Rico.

How to watch USA vs. Japan in the World Baseball Classic final: Time, TV channel, free live stream

This is the matchup many fans and players were hoping for, as two powerhouse sides packed with the stars of Major League Baseball and the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization clash for the title. Japan is on the hunt for its third WBC title, while Team USA will be shooting for back-to-back wins.

Trea Turner is on a red hot streak for the USA, with a grand slam in the quarterfinals followed by two home runs in the semifinal on Sunday. Japan’s Munetaka Murakami could be a game changer, depending on whether he’s cold at the plate, like he has been most of the tournament, or opens up with another deep blast like the one that gave Japan a walk off win in the semifinals.

Shohei Ohtani is coming off a clutch performance in the comeback win over Mexico in the semis, and he figures to be batting third against Kelly and the U.S. He's Japan's most accomplished hitter, and his power will probably be needed in this one if Japan is to prevail. Ohtani is also worth watching because there's a chance that he'll pitch in relief and maybe even face Angels teammate Mike Trout.

Trea Turner continued his hot streak with two home runs in the semi-final against Cuba, and he and his Team USA teammates will now play in the championship game on Tuesday (March 21), against Mexico or Japan.

The prize for the winner is the big one – the World Baseball Classic trophy, and the right to be called national team world champions.
