The success of Operation: Doomsday led to the production of Sober, which could have been a watered-down version of Madlib and DOOMs last project with the same name, but instead, its their experiment to give themselves room to fail. DOOM has often been compared to the Rock and Roll rebel of the 1960s (the 50s werent popular in his house), and so for Sober, DOOM decided to make an album about the 50s, with jazzy string arrangements and a bit of Funk. It was a stylistic contradiction, but one that works for DOOM, as the album features him rejecting the norms of society and pushing the envelope with his thoughts. The album ends with the equally ill Dear Mama, a complete rejection of societal expectations, with the singer-rapper declaring to a girl who has been cheating on him that, if your gonna cheat on me just cheat on me with me, instead of me with a dolla / and thats all Ive got to say, im your man.


DOOM released Villainous Rap Tactics a year later, on the heels of the success of DOOMs two solo albums, to finish out 2004. The album is a shorter, looser take on Sober, giving less time to each of the individual songs and instead using interludes and breakbeats to create what are now staples of DOOMs albums. The album continues DOOMs disdain for the music industry, with lines like But Ive had to deal with a record label that lets the public off the hook / Its like the clothing industry with the Con-verse hat. The album also looks at the madness in Hip-Hop, with lines such as Just as Jay-Z climbed to the top of the mainstream Rock & Roll industry / I rap well enough to be a pro wrestler or boxing champion / Only thing is they still send me drug tests every year / cause even pro wrestlers get stabbed to death.
