the first work to appear in gulliver, the story is told in a form close to that of the popular folk tale, and is based on the traditional greek myth of thersites, the army general who kept taunting alexander the great, and how, at last, the king had him murdered. the theme of the tale is the satirical view of society, of the military, and the futility of human efforts. manara was among the first to portray the human figure in a comic strip, developing a distinctive graphic style which is not unlike the french artist maurice de bevere. the drawing style is smooth, and the figures are almost always in silhouette. the characters in the story are ideal, and the image of the statuesque thersites in contrast with the portly alexander is extremely effective. the artist uses a small amount of realistic detail in the characters, the occasional fold in the soldier's uniform, the clink of coinage, and in the representations of the various greek cities. manara often had difficulty in defining his characters' sexes, as thersites is neither male nor female, and is described simply as "a roman boy", a "roman boy", a "roman boy".
