This is a study of individuals 1) living in the flooded area of Louisiana and 2) living in outlying areas affected by the flood but not flooded, (areas of Louisiana that are not directly flood prone) to assess the impact of flood on mental health among refugees. Participants completed the MINI. No specific diagnosis was given. The MINI assesses for the following disorders: major depressive disorder, any depressive disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia with or without panic disorder, social phobia, OCD, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol abuse or dependence and drug abuse or dependence. The MINI screen for mood, anxiety, somatic, psychotic, behavioral, and sexual disorders.


In this study, participants were recruited through flyers or on-site visits to the Columbia University Research Subjects Registry. After providing informed consent, participants completed a brief survey and SUD and trauma history screen with a research staff member. Participants also received an oral screening administered by a research staff member (with assistance if needed). Participants who screened positive for alcohol, nicotine, or cannabis use were excluded. This study focused on participants who were smokers. The MINI was administered by a trained staff member.
