Tajikistan was the end of the international highway. From the Indian Embassy in Bangkok, Muthu would fly to the Tashkent international airport and then take a Russian-operated overnight flight to Dushanbe.

Muthu learnt Russian and read the Patriot Files, the classified US Embassy cables being routinely leaked to the press. One such cable, written in March 2000, was headlined Massoud's words: "Tale of two brothers."

Muthu was told that the Russian officer who knew Massoud, Colonel G. M, was living in Bangkok. The Indian embassy there sought his help in making contact with the colonel, and his help was forthcoming.

The colonel also asked Muthu Kumar why India was providing weapons to Massoud's people. Muthu Kumar tried to explain that the Indians were putting these weapons on the backs of the Georgians who were providing the training.

Muthu Kumar decided to ask the colonel to provide an explanation for Massoud's assassination. The colonel did give this explanation. Firstly, he said, this was not the first time the Russians had killed someone close to Massoud. Then he said, "You know the Russians have never liked Massoud."

Bharath Raj Muthu Kumar says, We have never wavered on our policy. Our military assistance to Massoud (and later to the Northern Alliance as well) has been a consistent policy and has had an important role to play. What has been said is that the approach has to change now. India has to decide what they want to do about the Taliban in Afghanistan. They can help the Northern Alliance and the NATO Coalition indirectly. But it has to be done more openly and publicly than what Indias been doing up to now. 84d34552a1
