i am definitely going to explore this further when i get back. this seems like a completely new area of the american indian wedding industry. i have heard of other us indian couples who have travelled to india to get married and have used indian wedding coordinators to plan and execute their weddings.

on sunday we attended a jewish-christian wedding - a couple who come from very different backgrounds. the bride is christian (i think, but could have been jewish) and the groom is sikh. they live in delhi, one is in the civil service and the other is an entrepreneur. a jewish-christian intermarriage is a rarity in india, and this was their first visit to a synagogue. there was much to admire. the wedding was not ostentatious, the food was good and the family of the groom came from out of town. the non-jews wanted the couple to feel welcome and that they were part of the family - something which they could appreciate.

the visit was rounded off with a visit to a small workshop where the couple are learning about traditional jewellery making. the works featured many fascinating and very old items. a hindu wedding gift, a man-made skull, a set of three tiny silver foot-pedal sewing machines (for a very small child), a pretty box with a photograph of a young woman in a red chador, a pair of matching needlework boxes for two sets of (indigenous) jewellery.

we also met with a number of the other representatives of the community, and discussed ways of improving relations. the community seems to have an educational ethos, with a small library, a school and a clinic. a cooperative market is one of the activities. a new indian (hindu) temple has recently been built in the nearby muslim community. 84d34552a1
