case's partners in radioplane corp., william and doris powers, did the flying, while case constructed the radio control system and the airplanes, and denny's brother-in-law paul mckee served as the company's marketing agent.

the model was controlled by radio signals and was operated from the ground station with the aid of a 10-foot wand. a pilot sitting on the ground had directional control of the model with the wand, while the gunner, a second pilot, controlled its flight with a second wand. the first production model, the red baron, was designed in 1941, and the first civilian model, the firefly, was launched in december 1945.

aerial-target operations using the red baron took place over the arizona desert in the wake of the second world war, but most operations were confined to indoor arenas. on january 24, 1949, however, a red baron was used to simulate antiaircraft fire in a live-fire training exercise in the mojave desert.

the model's success led to a great deal of interest from the military, and pilots were soon training in its use. the u.s. air force even used it to simulate real aircraft, and the model came to be used to determine the point-blank range for u. fighter-bomber aircraft.

the u.s. military expressed interest in case's idea of providing aerial targets, and in 1946 he began working on aerial targets for the air force and the u. navy. at the time, case and denny discussed the possibility of manufacturing a remotely controlled model airplane, and case produced a diorama in which he simulated a world war ii fighter plane as an aerial target. despite the initial interest, aerial-target operations with the red baron did not begin until a week after the second world war ended, when the army air forces conducted 20 test flights at edwards air force base, california, for a target system called skybolt. 84d34552a1
