peter's assurance of the divine commission of paul and barnabas is founded on the fact that they neither know nor love the way of jesus but are focused on the gospel of the uncircumcision in galatia, which is the gospel of the kingdom of god. it can be said that peter as the "oldest" of the apostles is the "oldest" in the sense that paul, peter, and john, in speaking to the old-church in asia minor, are all speaking to the "oldest" church. yet peter is not the oldest of the apostles simply because he preceded paul. peter is the "oldest" because he is the foremost witness to the superiority of the way of jesus. he is the first apostle whose authority is recognized by all.

  1. one must do whatever is needed to prepare the people for the coming of the christ. to this purpose, peter writes: awake, o sleeper, and rise from the dead, and christ will shine on you (vss. 11-12).

chapter 2 is dedicated to the influence of the evil one on the new testament, in particular the books of the gospels, the letters of paul, and especially revelation. richard hays, in his well-known the fate of the popular jesus and the problem of history, has pointed out that the early christian tradition of the resurrection of jesus hardly differs from the teaching of the jewish expectation of the messiah (cf. phil 3:10). peter james explains that there are distinct differences between the jewish expectation of the messiah and what paul and the earliest christians describe about the jesus of nazareth. by proclaiming the resurrection of jesus, the gospels accent the theme of the victory of god over evil, culminating in the resurrection. through a comparison with our own experience as regards evil, the author explains the meaning of the resurrection for us. 84d34552a1
