In the preface of his book, Gary explains that he wrote this poem in the story of the Early Light (Autumn 1984). In 1967, the French author and poet Antoine Volodine published an eponymous story in which he describes a train journey between Paris and Bordeaux where he met a "typical American poet" who speaks so little French that he didn't realize he had purchased the wrong ticket and was waiting in the wrong place. The poet Gary grew up in one of the most beautiful American counties with deep forests, lakes, and rivers, and wrote an article for The New York Times Magazine about this town in January 1974. He also wrote, "I still walk in a little town of Appalachia, ten miles from the nearest town, with my neighbors on a town road, where the grass grows high, the trees are green, there is a sense of freedom...." In the same story, Antoine Volodine later wrote that he met Gary Snyder in this town of Appalachia in New York state, and he let Gary sleep on his living room floor. He calls Gary "the most beautiful person" he met in New York, and in 1974, Gary was invited to teach American literature at the Academy of American Poets in Rome. Later, Gary was also invited to teach literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. In the story of Early Light, I mentioned that I met Gary Snyder in 1974 and took him to the "beautiful small town" in Germany, where I had been invited to play at a concert. "In the end, to follow an American poet to his native village, the village of the people, is to join together a man and a land," wrote Hesse. The art song "Music For Earthworms" is influenced by Gary's poem The Earthworms. In this poem, Gary mainly wrote about the environment in which he lives, but as I grew up with him, I felt that the poem had a profound significance for me. The story of the Earthworms is like a play of the human condition, and it is especially powerful for those who live in a small village near the country of Western Europe. In the poem, Gary makes the world of the earthworms literal and metaphorical and describes their existence as the essence of living. "I AM lying in a room, listening to music. And I AM the music. And I AM the dance. 84d34552a1
