The main story arc of the first part of Filhos do Carnaval was about the truth of the Gomes familys experiences. The story begins as three brothers, Raphael, Renato and Dario are welcomed to an elite private school. Dario is a black and Renato and Raphael are light-skinned. Another similarity is that Raphael and Renato have a sports scholarship and Dario is not so lucky. However, Filhos do Carnaval shows us that the Gomes brothers are more alike than different. They too are surrounded by wealth and privilege. They too are torn between admiration for the father and the fear that they would fail to reach their parents dreams. The son Dario is envied by his peers (including his siblings) and the son Raphael seeks to emulate his fathers brilliance. The reality is that Filhos do Carnaval never lets us forget the social, economic and cultural forces that continually shape these boys lives and their choices.

Filhos do Carnaval is not an easy show to watch. It does not shy away from depicting violence and acts of cruelty. While the sensuality of Brazil is perhaps Filhos do Carnaval one of my favorite things about this show, it is hard to find joy in the performances when characters are shot or their bodies are thrown into an incinerator. Yet, this is a necessary part of the story because Filhos do Carnaval shows us that despair and despairing are not always as permanent as it seems. No one can hold a gun to your head and force you to feel sorry for yourself, but the demons of the past can still haunt you in the present. 84d34552a1
