pliDoc - literate programming at its best

TL;DR

pliDoc is a node tool which generates literate-programming documents in every programming language.

Questions ?

What does this name mean ?

'Pli' is the Esperanto word for 'more' and 'Doc' stands for Documentation.

Does this mean that I have to learn Esperanto to use pliDoc ?

No, this Esperanto word just shows, that pliDoc can be used to do literate programming in any programming language from 'A' like 'Ada' to 'Y' like 'YAML' and makes it easy to write more and better documentation.

So what does pliDoc for me ?

pliDoc generates documentation from markdown comments in a source file. The source is highlighted and the nicely rendered documentation is placed in between. pliDoc is based on Docco.

What makes pliDoc better than Docco ?

While Docco does what it does in a quick and dirty way, there are some things missing in its feature set:

  • Seperate code comments from literate programming style descriptions by using different tags to denote them.
  • Use multiline comments for the documentation.
  • Include Mathjax to directly support mathematics with Latex-equations and make it markdown compatible.
  • Pack documentation in one single html-document, including all css-assets, fonts, etc. This is helpful e.g. for code reviews, since you then only have to send one single file instead of a whole zip file.
